Evaluating the effect of tunnelling on historic buildings: Examples from the new Rome Metro Line C, London

About this event

The lecture will present the methods adopted to evaluate the effects of tunnelling and open excavation on the historical buildings and monuments. To study the interaction between construction activities and the built environment, analytical methods of increasing complexity were used:

Level 1 - a preliminary evaluation of the potential damage by undertaking a green-field settlement analyses;

Level 2 – if the level 1 analysis shows excessive movement, FE analyses were undertaken that took account of the stiffness of the existing buildings and considered the long-term effects induced by drainage through the tunnel lining.

During the talk, the important aspects of the analytical procedure will be illustrated by case histories.
