This presentation will provide an insight into the design and the construction of several recent long span bridges, including the erection engineering and temporary works requirements for both the superstructure and substructure construction. The relationship between the design and construction, and the impact that the different choices in both activities have on each other, will be highlighted. The presentation will include examples of the problems that can be encountered and how they were overcome.

Nigel Hewson has over 40 years’ experience in the design and construction of bridgeworks in the UK, Europe, Africa, Asia and Middle East. He started his career by working on Byker Viaduct which was the first precast segmental bridge in the UK. This was followed by a long list of other prestigious bridge projects where he was responsible for the detailed design or the construction works, which includes West Kowloon Expressway, Hung Hom Bypass, Bangkok Expressway, Malaysia-Singapore Second Crossing, Turkey Second Bosporus Crossing, Taiwan High Speed Rail Viaducts, Dubai LRT Viaducts, Yamuna Cable-Stayed Bridge and Nigeria Bonny River Suspension Bridge. He has been recognized as one of the pioneers who introduced modern bridge design and construction techniques to a number of developing countries, during which he gained an international reputation as a leading bridge expert.

Most recently, Nigel has been closely involved with a number of long span bridges, including the 3rd Bosporus Bridge in Turkey and the Subiyah Causeway in Kuwait. The former is currently the world’s longest hybrid bridge with a span of 1408m and a combination of stay cables and suspension cables, where Hewsons provided support to the Contractor during both the design and construction stages. The latter includes an iconic main bridge with a sail shaped pylon and composite steel/concrete deck, where Hewsons carried out the erection engineering as well as the design of a range of temporary works and bridge components.

After founding Hewson Consulting in 2005, Nigel has dedicated the company to providing a wide range of consulting services to Clients and Contractors in the field of bridge engineering and other civil structures which covers permanent works, temporary works and bridge erection. He has led the growth of the company from just himself to a multi-award winning design consultancy with overseas offices in Hong Kong and Malaysia.
