With an increasing focus on temporary works in the construction industry, especially in the area of excavation support, excavations are notoriously dangerous due to the unpredictable nature of the ground conditions.
Associated risks include: ground movement, collapse or cave-in, as well as potential impacts on surrounding structures, works and the public.
MGF Excavation Safety Solutions are a national supplier who specialise in the design and provision of modular and bespoke excavation support systems. MGF will be discussing some of the industry-wide issues faced with excavation support and demonstrate how the challenging circumstances were overcome through case studies.
Ben is a Senior Design Engineer for MGF Design Services, based in Astley, Manchester. After graduating with a Masters degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Manchester in 2012, he worked as a Geotechnical Engineer for Mouchel and WSP. After four years within engineering consultancies, Ben transferred to the specialist design of excavation support systems in December 2016, becoming an Incorporated Engineer with ICE in 2018.
During his career, Ben has been involved in a variety of schemes at differing stages of the project lifecycle. Ben’s recent design experience for MGF has involved reviewing temporary works design briefs, completing temporary works designs and working closely with contractors to determine suitable solutions. This has been primarily on schemes within the Midlands and East Anglia, recently producing excavation support designs for Midland Metro Alliance in Birmingham to accommodate the new tramway. In addition, Ben has designed temporary works to enable the construction of underground infrastructure at the new Worcester Station (for Buckingham Group Contractors) and Frankley WTW (for North Midland Construction).
