Lead by Nottingham Cycle Tours, the tour celebrates the achievements of local engineers with historical facts and anecdotes: from the construction of the first asphalt highway, the first pressurised water system in the UK, and a resident responsible for the pre-cursor of traffic lights, the city has a great story to tell.
The tour will encompass the rail station, the canal, the cycle super highway, the Park Tunnel, Belle Vue Reservoir, Great Central Railway Tunnel Portal, the former Leen Valley Railway Line, the River Leen, the tram system, the Jubilee Campus, and the bridges over the River Trent.
The tour is 90% off road, using cycle tracks, shared footways and towpaths, with the remainder using quiet roads, over approximately 14 miles lasting 3 hours. The tour crosses several busy road junctions, largely via controlled crossing points, but there will be one short section over 300m using an on road cycle lane.
Nottingham Cycle Tours, with British Cycling Ride Leader trained guides, who are also practising civil engineers, will lead the tours. They can promise an enjoyable, informative and invigorating celebration of the role that civil engineers play in society in Nottingham and beyond. You do not have to be an engineer to enjoy the tour.
Participants will need to provide their own bikes, in good working condition/roadworthy, British Standard cycle helmets, be competent cyclists and will need to wear suitable footwear.
Unfortunately children below secondary school age cannot participate unless accompanied by an adult who will take full responsibility for their supervision. Nottingham City Council bikes can he hired for as a little as £4 per day. Nottingham Cycle Tours can assist with advanced notice.
All participants are required to read and sign a disclaimer before the tour commences. A copy of this can be viewed on: nottinghamcycletours.co.uk
