The Coultershaw Heritage Site is located south of Petworth in the heart of the South Downs. The site includes a waterwheel, 18th century water pump, 21st century water turbine and historic buildings set around a mill pond.
The development of the Coultershaw site began in 1976 when volunteers from the Sussex Industrial Archaeology Society started the restoration of the 1782 Beam Pump. This pump, originally installed to pump water from the River Rother to Petworth House, had operated until 1960.
When the mill was demolished in 1973, the Beam Pump was abandoned and buried. After nearly five year's restoration work, the pump was made to work again in 1980, when it was also scheduled as an Ancient Monument. The Sussex Industrial Archaeology Society operated the Beam Pump until 2002, when the Coultershaw Trust was formed to develop the heritage site.
Following a major redevelopment, the restored site now includes original buildings, the 1919 Engine House and a collection of water pumps. Exhibitions enable visitors to understand the importance of Coultershaw in the development of Petworth and the surrounding area. During the visit it will be possible to:
The visit will last about 2 hours and, following an introductory talk by Robin Wilson, the site curator and Past President of ICE, there will be a guided tour of the site.
The cost will be £3 per person, payable in cash on the day.
Refreshments will be served during the talk. There will be an opportunity to have lunch at the nearby Badgers pub after the event. Once you have booked your place online, please then advise firstname.lastname@example.org if you wish to join the lunch group.
