A network of new rail tunnels have been built by eight giant tunnel boring machines, to carry the new Elizabeth Line trains eastbound and westbound. Each tunnel is 21 kilometres/13 miles long, 6.2 metres in diameter and up to 40 metres below ground.
Since the tunnelling was completed in 2015, fit out works in portals, shafts and stations has been underway. Rail systems are now being installed in readiness for the programme to move into its testing and commissioning phase. There are 10 new stations being constructed on the route. BIM is being used at all stages of these complex projects, from coordination of interfaces in design and at site, to tracking procurement and construction, and production of as-built information and the digital record for the operator and maintainer.
Hear how the challenges at these complex stations are being overcome, and what lessons can be learned for other mega-projects, including first-hand experience of working in the BIM environment at all stages of the project.
