About this event

Genale Dawa (GD3) is one of the largest hydropower dam projects currently being undertaken by Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP). It is being designed and constructed by the Chinese Corporation, CGGC with MWH undertaking the role of Owner's Engineer.

This presentation will give an overview of Ethiopia's current push to grow its economy and improve the living standards of its population by developing its large potential for hydropower to drive an increase in trade and industry and provide electricity to rural communities. It will then describe in greater detail the GD3 scheme and, in particular, the design and construction of the 110m high Concrete Faced Rockfill Dam (CFRD) and its appurtenant structures as well as the challenges faced from working in a remote location with a diverse project team.

Allan Marshall

Allan Marshall is a Chartered Civil Engineer with over 46 years' experience in the construction management of hydroelectric and other water related infrastructure projects in various countries around the world. For the past five years he has been MWH's Project Manager for the Genale Dawa (GD3) hydropower project and prior to that he was their Resident Engineer for the Tekeze hydropower project in northern Ethiopia.

Jonathan Troke

Jon is a Chartered Civil Engineer with 20 years' experience in water engineering and has worked for the MWH Dams team since 2003. He has spent the last six years in the supervision of large dam projects, firstly on the Abberton Dam Raising in Essex and most recently as Resident Dam Engineer on the Genale Dawa (GD3) scheme in Ethiopia. He is now back in the MWH High Wycombe office and plans to work towards becoming a Reservoir Supervising Engineer.
