Chenab Bridge is a very important bridge of the national project of Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link Project. It will be world's highest railway bridge once completed. By its very location in young Himalayan Mountains, seismically active area, across a gorge with complex alignment of the bridge makes the design and construction of the bridge truly world class. There were many challenges.
The biggest challenge in the design is the development of design basis note itself. During the execution there were many challenges like geotechnical investigations, wind tunnel testing, incremental launching on combined transition and circular curves perhaps for the first time in the world by employing innovative approach. Construction of enabling works is another big challenge.
With nearly 65% of the work completed on date, how the challenges are met with so far successfully and the left-out challenges ahead will be presented.
Srinivas is a graduate in Civil Engineering from National Institute of Technology, Warangal and Postgraduate in Marine Geotechnical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai. Currently he is registered for PhD at Indian Institute of Technology, Dhanbad in the area of rock slope engineering.
He has rich experience of more than 31years covering various areas of design, execution, project management and innovation. Currently he is working as Vice President in Afcons. He looks after the technical aspects of the Chenab Bridge project.
