Glass: What all engineers need to know, Teesside

About this event

Construction now commonly uses glass as an engineering material, so all engineers and students need to know something of its properties.

Chris O'Regan recently worked within IStructE as a Technical Author and was tasked with revising the now 16 year old publication, Structural Use of Glass in Buildings.

This talk will focus on the 2nd edition of this publication and also offers some practical advice on how to design structural glass elements using limit-state theory.

The content of the talk can be summarised as follows:

  • Contents of Structural Use of Glass in Buildings - Second Edition
  • Types of Glass
  • Glass behaviour
  • Laminated Glass
  • Introduction to prEN 16612 and prEN 16613
  • Determining strength of monolithic glass
  • Effective thickness of laminated glass
  • Composite action of laminated glass
  • Worked example of a glass floor plate design
