About this event

Bearings form a key part of modern bridge construction, transferring the loads and weight of the deck spans to their piers, and accommodating the thermal expansion and contraction of the structure.

This lecture, given by William Day and Tim Belcher-Whyte of Arcadis, will explore the development of bridge bearings from their first recorded use at Menai in the early 19th Century.

The bearings at Rochester Bridge, now over 100 years old, will be presented in a case study demonstrating how historic bridge bearings continue to be a valuable asset in the present day.
