The walk starts from East Farleigh Bridge (adjacent to East Farleigh Railway Station – one stop from Maidstone West Station) and will end at Yalding ‘The Boathouse’ Public House, a short hop from Yalding Railway Station.
This section of the River Medway is peppered with both historic and contemporary structures dated between the early 14th century through to the 20th century. The walk will take in at least 6 older structures and 3 more recent structures and is about 9km (5½ miles) in length. We expect to spend a leisurely 3 hours wandering the riparian zone of the River Medway, hopefully learning something of the history and beauty of this area.
The starting point, East Farleigh Bridge, is first mentioned in 1324 and features in battles of the English Civil War. It is thought to be the oldest medieval bridge in Kent. On the walk there will be a chance to see the canoe and fish pass at Teston Lock and the automatic weir at Yalding (Teapot Island). Teapot Island is so called because of its shape but it now, of course, houses a collection of over 3000 teapots.
The walk will end at the newly refurbished ‘Boathouse’ which has a fine menu on offer and is located beside the historic grade 1 listed Twyford Bridge.
Walkers do so at their own risk and there is no desperate need to book but it would be helpful to have an indication of numbers. There is no charge for the event but walkers may wish to avail themselves of the opportunity for lunch at ‘The Boathouse’ which, of course, will mean parting with some cash.
If you intend to join the walk, please send an email to [email protected], advising the numbers in your group. We don’t want to turn people away but, if this proves to be very popular, we may need to ensure there are additional guides available.
All grades of membership, partners and guests, are welcome at this event. Attendance will count towards CPD.
