Hong Kong is facing the food waste management challenge. The current practice of disposing food waste in the landfills is not a sustainable solution as it consumes valuable landfill capacity, generates leachate and greenhouse gas that require further mitigation measures, and cut away the reuse of organic waste. One of the efficient and environmentally sound methods of recycling food waste is to build a network of dedicated recycling plants.
O · PARK1, the first organic resources recovery centre, locating at Siu Ho Wan of North Lantau adopts anaerobic digestion technology to convert food waste into biogas (a source of renewable energy similar to natural gas) for electricity generation whilst the residues from the process can be produced as compost for landscaping and agriculture use. It is capable of handling 200 tonnes of food waste per day. It is also a renewable energy generation plant by turning Waste-to-Energy. When running in full capacity, about 14 million kWh of electricity can be exported to the grid per year, which is equivalent to the power consumption by some 3,000 households.
Participants will discover and learn more about the process for handing the food waste and turning the waste to energy, as well as the challenges they overcome through this Virtual Technical Visit.
The virtual visit will be concluded by a Q&A session hosted by the site representatives and the ICEHKA site visit reporters. All the presentation and visit will be conducted on the Webinar platform.
