A presentation and debate on current and future issues the civil engineering industry faces in trying to build a world that can find a balance between the needs of our economy, our environment and our society on a local and global scale. Projects that Opus have been involved with will be presented, including the Brownfield Briefing Award “Best Sustainable Building on a Brownfield site" won by Opus for The GlaxoSmithKline Carbon Neutral Laboratory for Sustainable Chemistry. This state-of-the-art building incorporates the latest sustainable technologies and best practices, allowing it to become carbon-neutral within the next 25 years.

Lydia Evans is a Chartered Water and Environmental Manager and Chartered Environmentalist with over 13 years’ experience of working in the civil engineering industry, initially undertaking contaminated land based ground investigations and EMS audits as an Environmental Scientist. Since joining Opus in 2005, she has become skilled in the project management of contaminated land assessments while maintaining a keen interest in sustainable land development and Environmental Management Systems.

Neil Morris started out in industry working for a site investigation company, developing a specialism in contaminated land investigations, risk assessment and remediation. In the last 10 years Neil has worked for Opus International, as an office manager, and more recently a Technical Director. Neil is a Chartered Geologist and professional member of IEMA and continues to have an interest in environment and sustainability issues and their application in the construction industry
