About this event

The presentation will describe how HS2 Ltd developed a series of specimen designs for the viaducts and bridges. It will discuss how the structures were grouped into convenient families for consistency, the reasons why such a specimen design approach was undertaken and what key aims were achieved. Current emerging scheme designs will also be discussed.


David Smith FICE

David Smith

David is a Technical Director in Atkins’ Transportation Division, specialising in bridge engineering. He has over 25 years’ experience in the design, assessment and strengthening of highway, light rail and high speed rail structures. He is currently seconded to High Speed 2 Ltd as lead discipline engineer for bridges and viaducts throughout the whole route.

In his current role, David is responsible for the development and maintenance of the bridge technical standards and aesthetic design requirements HS2. Before this, David led the viaduct design for the Dubai Metro and the Jeddah Airport design.
