An overview of the scheme from a geotechnical perspective

About this event

Chartered Geologist Graham Dowlen's, role is to review and undertake quality assurance of the contractor's GI reports and provide mentoring to the GI Contractor/HS2 site staff to ensure accurate recording of all the ground conditions, consistency of reporting all the details between the GI Contractors, and confirming the actual stratigraphy on Phase 1 route wide. During the site works/early reporting stages it became apparent that the original desk studies, which were based on very limited available information, were inaccurate.

The GI site works have identified significant variations in the ground conditions along the Phase 1 route compared to the anticipated conditions identified within the desk studies. Furthermore the route alignment has been found to be subject to a significant amount of unrecorded faulting. The actual ground conditions encountered during the investigation will have an impact on the design of the many structural elements that will be constructed within the overall scheme.
