About this event

The activity comprises four stages, namely a Briefing Session (Mar 2017), first round competition (Jul 2017), final round competition (Sep 2017) and presentation/demonstration of the winning board game at Launching of ICE 200 Activity Series (Jan 2018).

Briefing Session

The Briefing Session is designed to enhance target participants' interests and understanding of the civil engineering world, as well as their knowledge in board games such that they would find integration and synergy between the two subjects. Details are as follows:-

  1. Fascinating aspects of civil engineering and vision for civil engineering in the future from a personal perspective
    - by experienced civil engineers
  2. Introduction to board game competition
    – by ICE HKA Chairman and the Organising Committee
  3. Sharing by a "Board game expert"
    – by a board game café owner / board game producer

Speakers

Mr Wai Chi-sing

Mr Wai Chi-sing obtained his first degree in civil engineering from the University of Hong Kong, and his master degree in transportation engineering from the Purdue University in the United States. He has professional qualifications in civil, structural and geotechnical engineering.

Mr Wai joined the Hong Kong Government as an Assistant Engineer in August 1980, and since then his career has been closely associated with the development of Hong Kong's infrastructure. He has served in the Transport Department, the former Territory Development Department, the Highways Department, and the Works Branch of the former Environment, Transport and Works Bureau. He was the Director of the Highways Department from November 2006 to June 2010 and was the Permanent Secretary for Development (Works) in June 2010 until his retirement in April 2015.

Mr Wai has been appointed the Managing Director of the Urban Renewal Authority since June 2016 and is now a Director of the Board of Urban Renewal Fund.

Ms Jenny Yeung

Ms Jenny Yeung is the first female taking up the post of Chief Geotechnical Engineer in the HKSAR Government. About twenty years back she was the first female graduating with a BEng in Civil and Structural Engineering from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. She joined the Government right after graduation, dedicated to serve the community with her engineering profession. She obtained three professional qualifications in the Civil, Structural and Geotechnical Disciplines in 2000, and was awarded "Trainee of the Year" and "Young Engineer of the Year" in 1997 and 2006 respectively.

Striving for professional excellence, she acquired the British Chevening Scholarship and completed her MPhil study in the University of Cambridge in 2002. Jenny has taken up various posts in the Government involving different civil and geotechnical projects. She is currently working in the Civil Engineering and Development Department, promoting slope safety in Hong Kong. She also devotes herself to community services in Hong Kong and the Mainland.

Mr Thomas Lam

Mr Thomas Lam is a registered social worker and senior board game instructor and was the first to apply board games to counselling and career development of students in Hong Kong. He serves as a professional trainer to who organises workshops for educational purposes. He represents Hong Kong in international board game competitions and has won numerous awards, including Regional Champions for Settlers of Catan and Carcassonne.
