ICE HKA Technical Seminar: Advanced bridge construction technology – Case study of Cross Bay Link was successfully held on 3 September 2021 in the Grand Ballroom of Rosewood Hong Kong. The event was overwhelmed with over 250 partipants. Under the COVID19, we ensured that the venue was set up accordingly to fulfil the social distancing requirement and minimising any risk.

The afternoon began with a welcome address by Louis Wong, chairman of Institution of Civil Engineers Hong Kong Association.

Our keynote speaker, Sai-hung Lam, GBS, JP, ICE Representative for Hong Kong, shared about bridge construction, particularly the evolution of bridges in Hong Kong. He also remarked that ‘Hong Kong is a museum of bridges’ with more opportunities and challenges for bridge engineers in the coming future.

Constructing the Cross Bay Link

We were honoured to have a range of speakers that were key to the birth of Cross Bay Link, from designers, contractors, and academia.

Dr Robin Sham sector managing director AECOM, kick-started the journey as the designer of Cross Bay Link. He illustrated the creative design of the Eternity Arch and demonstrated the technical challenges faced in the structural design.

Jun Kan, president of China Road and Bridge Corporation (Hong Kong) led us through the construction stage of Cross Bay Link from planning to delivering of mega-size prefabricated bridge units. Cross Bay Link was the first to implement the innovative “float-in” method in Hong Kong.

To further explore the micro aspect of bridge construction technology, Prof K F Chung, professor of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, introduced the applications of high strength S690 steels in construction owing to their high strength to self-weight ratios, which often provide significant savings in costs and time.

Bridge innovations

Then Stephen Mak, operations director of Meinhardt Infrastructure and Environment Limited and Chengrui Hu, area director of Hewson Consulting Limited provided a series of innovative bridge engineering solutions that were developed and implemented on Cross Bay Link.

One of the main features is the use of modern Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DfMA) technology for the design and construction of major bridge substructure elements.

We are thankful for the support of our sponsors and supporting organisations, without which the seminar would not have resulted such success.

Our appreciation also go to the panel discussion moderator, Dr Eric Li, Immediate Past Chairman of ICE HKA, whose insightful discussion with the speakers have made the seminar more rewarding.

The afternoon ended with closing remarks by Michael Leung, JP, Civil Engineering and Development Department of HKSARG.
