Rick will describe the history, opportunities and challenges of the "Smart Cities" movement using real examples from around the world; address some of the main arguments – in particular, whether cities will be improved through "top- down" technology programmes or through "bottom-up" innovation – and look ahead to how we can help local and national governments seize the technology agenda more effectively to the benefit of citizens, communities and businesses.

Dr Rick Robinson

Dr Rick Robinson is IT Director for Smart Data and Technology at Amey. Previously, he was IBM UK's Executive Architect for Smarter Cities. Rick is a member of the Government's Smart Cities Forum, a Fellow of the British Computer Society and the RSA, an Open Group Distinguished Certified IT Architect and a member of the Academy of Urbanism.
