About this event

We would like to propose a visit on Saturday 3 September 2016 to the site of the Nant de Drance pumped storage facility in le Châtelard, above Martigny, in the Valais.

This gigantic project, which was begun in 2008 and will be commissioned in 2018, involves building a new 900 MW pumped storage power station between the existing Vieux Emosson and Emosson artificial lakes, by raising the height of the upper dam by 20 m, boring 17 km of tunnels, and excavating a main cavern 200 m long, 60 m high and 30 m wide. Currently, the main civil works are reaching completion, and powerhouse fit-out and electromechanical installation works are taking place.

Gérard Seingre, the overall construction manager for Nant de Drance, has exceptionally made himself available to present the project to us, and bring us around the key sites of this gigantic installation. He has an in-depth and holistic view of the project, and will be a great guide for us around this unique feat of engineering!

For a preview of what we will be seeing on the day, the website contains a concise explanation of the Nant de Drance facility, as well as numerous photographs and videos of the works.

We would also like to take the opportunity of the reunion to organise a brief Annual General Meeting before the site visit. Etienne, our long-standing treasurer, will be hanging up his boots after 35 years of loyal service, and we would be keen to recruit a new volunteer for this key post on the committee. Furthermore, if you have any subject which you would like discussed by our members during this meeting, please feel free to forward it to us beforehand.

The foreseen timetable for our reunion on Saturday 3 September would be as follows:

10:00 – meeting at Martigny main station
11:00 – Annual General Meeting at the Restaurant (probably at Emosson Dam or Vieux Emosson)
12:00 – Lunch with Gérard Seingre

Afternoon: presentation and site visit of Nant de Drance

17:30 – Return to Martigny station

In order to register your interest in attending the AGM and site visit, please fill in the doodle at the following link by 31 July 2016. The detailed timetable and AGM agenda will be forwarded to you in due course!

We look forward to hearing back from you all and seeing as many of you as possible at our get-together!
