The immersed tunnel technology is traditionally used for river crossings. Over the past two decades the immersed tunnel technology has been successfully used for the crossing of sea straits (in Denmark, South Korea, China) but tends to be used under more challenging soil and seismic conditions and in congested (urban) areas, e.g. under passing (old) buildings or runways on airports. The speaker will present these new developments and the innovations that came along with it.
The event will be cancelled or rescheduled to another date in case of Thunderstorm; Amber or Red or Black Rainstorm Alert; or Typhoon Signal No.3 or No. 8 or above being in force by the Hong Kong Observatory at or after 7am. It may also be cancelled because of safety or other reasons.
The Institution of Civil Engineers (Hong Kong Association) shall not under any circumstances be liable or otherwise for death or any injury or for any damage to or loss or destruction of property or otherwise, in any such case arising from any accident or mishap, and whether during or after this event, in preparation for it, traveling to or from it or otherwise.
Since 2009, Mr Hans de Wit has become the Managing Director of Tunnel Engineering Consultancy (TEC). TEC is a joint venture of Royal HaskoningDHV and Witteveen+Bos, focusing on the international tunnel market and one of the world’s lead immersed tunnel consultants. He combines the management responsibility for TEC with a Project Director and Senior consultant roles in large tunnel projects, a combination very suitable for me as a director operating in the international niche market of immersed tunnels.
Underground design and construction have been the backbone of his whole career and continues to give the challenges every engineer is looking for. He has been heavily involved for years in the North-South Metro Line Amsterdam as lead engineer / design manager / consultant for the deep station boxes and the immersed tunnel sections.
Furthermore Hans worked as Senior designer and consultant for various large national and international infrastructure projects, such as the Hong Kong Zhuhai Macau Bridge Link in China, Fehmarnbelt Link between Denmark and Germany, the Sharq Crossing in Doha and the Santos Guaruja Crossing in Brazil.
Mr Hans de Wit is also the lecturer in Immersed Tunnels on Delft University of Technology and for the ITA CET (International Tunnelling Association).
