Julie Bregulla will provide an overview of the recommendations from the 2018 In Plain Sight report aimed at mitigating the risk of infrastructure failure.
Julie has taken the lead from Prof. Peter Hansford to address mitigating the risks of infrastructure failure. She chairs the ICE working group implement the recommendations of the In Plain Sight report and will provide an update on progress and the ongoing work required to assure the safety of civil infrastructure and the continued professional development of engineers and infrastructure professionals. This event is in celebration of and promoting International Women in Engineering Day.

Julie is a Director at the Building Research Establishment, which she joined in 2003 following her studies in structural and fire engineering. Julie has combined her engineering/ technical skills with commercial leadership, working in the UK, Europe and internationally. She advises on UK and EU legislation and regulatory issues. Her work provides engineering practice and innovation with insight on regulatory and compliance requirements as well as experimental and design data for decision-making. She is a Visiting Professor at the University of Bath, chairs the ICE’s Structures Expert Panel and TC250’s horizontal, pan-European Eurocode committee developing the provisions for robustness of structures.
Julie has been involved in a wide range of projects, from technical research to industry strategic studies. She has served as technical secretariat to the UK Building Regulations Advisory Committee, has chaired a sector group of the Group of Notified Bodies and has published over 300 reports, papers and industry guidance, covering various technical aspects of structural engineering.
Julie is a Fellow and Council member of the Institution of Civil Engineers and a member of the Expert Witness Institute. She Chairs ICE’s Structures Expert Panel, and is a member of the Standing Committee on Structural Safety (SCOSS), which includes contributing to Confidential Reporting on Structural Safety (CROSS) and industry-wide alerts and associated review and analysis.
