InstRE and ICE Joint Lecture 2016, London

About this event

The Institution of Civil Engineers and the Institution of Royal Engineers are pleased to announce that the annual joint event is taking place on 28 April 2016.

Co-chaired by ICE’s President Sir John Armitt and InstRE’s Vice President Brigadier Steven Boyd, the lecture will reveal the challenges and lessons learnt during Project ANEMOI in the Falkland Islands.Known as Project ANEMOI, the Royal Engineers from 8 Engineer Brigade are undertaking a complex, remote and challenging construction project building accommodation units on three hilltop sites in the Falkland Islands.

The Falkland Islands are nearly 8000 miles from the UK. To support the aerial protection provided by the UK Government, three hilltop sites were built and equipped with radars and accommodation in 1983. Long past their design life it is now the responsibility of the Royal Engineers to replace the worn out accommodation blocks with modern enduring facilities.

Simple in requirement; welfare, feeding and bed spaces, the facilities would be an everyday build in most parts of the world, but due to the remote location of the sites it means the isolation and weather presents major design and construction complexities. Added to that, the majority of construction resources are being transported 8000 miles from the UK to the construction sites. Using the Falkland Islands Resupply Ship and the air bridge provided by the RAF, it is a complex task to sequence and deliver all the stores in the right condition to the correct location.

The presentation will be followed by a drinks and canapé reception in the ICE Library, offering an excellent opportunity for networking and further discussion on the topic.
