Drawing on his considerable experience of working in the congested subterranean environment, Colin presents a summary of some of the challenges encountered when tunnelling beneath urban areas and some of the novel techniques he has employed to overcome them.

Looking to the future, Colin considers what challenges will be faced in the upcoming major tunnelling projects currently proposed for London and how the UK tunnelling industry can overcome them and maintain their position in a challenging international market.

Colin Eddie is Engineering Director of Morgan Sindall’s Tunnelling Division and Managing Director of the in-house design consultancy; Morgan Sindall Underground Professional Services Ltd. He is responsible for the management of a specialist underground engineering department which has undertaken the detailed design of some of the largest underground projects in the UK.

In the last twenty years, most of Morgan Sindall PLC’s tunnelling projects have been of a design and build nature and he has managed the design and implementation of over £2bn of tunnelling work in this period.

An Engineer with 35 years’ experience in tunnelling and underground construction, Colin has managed the design of many prestigious projects; including the UK’s largest tunnel (The North Downs Tunnel for the Channel Tunnel Rail Link).

Colin is an active member of the Institution of Civil Engineers and the British Tunnelling Society.
