About this event

Peel Ports are one of the largest, busiest and most diverse ports in the UK, sitting on both sides of the River Mersey. To maximise efficiency a single management team operates both the port and the Manchester Ship Canal and is the most impressive shipping network in the UK. It is also home to Liverpool2, a new £400m deep-water container terminal which opened in 2016. This has doubled the container capacity and made the port one of the country’s best-equipped and connected terminals.

Liverpool by numbers – a look at some of the stats behind one of the UK's most important ports:

  • £400m: cost to develop the Liverpool2 container terminal;
  • 35million: population that lives closer to Liverpool than south-east container ports;
  • 75%: containers filled with export goods by using Liverpool instead of other ports, compared with 53% nationally ;
  • 60%: proportion of containers leaving closer from or arriving closer to Liverpool than south-east ports;
  • 44 miles: length of the Manchester Ship Canal, linking the Port of Liverpool with the heart of the UK;
  • 31: freight trains saved, per week, if services call at Liverpool2 instead of south-east ports;
  • 10: motorways within 10 miles of Liverpool and the Manchester Ship Canal
