Are design and innovation a necessity or an indulgence within refugee camp design?
To what extent can the input of engineers and architects be useful when working in collaboration with humanitarians and others within this context?
This projects draws upon research during a trip to the refugee camps around the Thessaloniki area in the north of Greece where the group conducted high-level shelter assessments. Throughout the visit the team conducted informal interviews with refugees, NGO workers on the ground, military and ministry personnel, and were able to better understand their needs and to collect lessons learnt.
The work was disseminated through a workshop where practitioners, academics and policy makers were brought together to discuss shelter innovations emerging from the Syrian Refugee Crisis. Innovation relates to improvements in processes, and/or the implementation of new and novel ideas or products that have led to effective post disaster recovery.
The workshop identified the most profitable areas for further innovation, with focus on research opportunities & partnerships that seek to build the evidence base of what works in post-disaster recovery, as well as informing the ongoing work in Syria, Iraq and the surrounding countries.
