The physical health and well-being of people working in the construction industry is an area of focus for the entire sector. There is, however, a tangible and increasing concern around mental health. The construction industry lifestyle can be challenging and stressful and it is now being more widely recognised that work-related stress and mental health issues can be even higher in the construction industry.
Louise Hetherington (Structural Engineering) and Hannah Schaapkens (Electrical Engineering) from Constructing Mindsets will conduct a session on "Managing your mental health during Covid-19". The main topics covered in the talk will be around coping with change, managing your well-being and discussions around being furlough.
The speakers will host a 20-minute session followed by Q&A to answer any more specific questions around mental health and wellbeing during Covid-19.
‘Constructing Mindsets’ is a platform to discuss how to talk about and deal with mental health in the construction industry. Constructing Mindsets provides a place to share experiences, listen to others and create a movement for change around mental health.
CPD: This event may be considered for contributing to a recognised Continuing Professional Development (CPD) scheme as part of personal development. Delegates should check their individual scheme requirements.
This event is orgainised by ICE East Midlands Graduate and Students.
Louise is a structural engineer at Atkins, working with buildings across the heritage, industrial and education sectors.
As well as her day job, Louise volunteers as a Mental Health First Aider, Diversity and Inclusion champion, STEM Ambassador and co-chairs the Atkins Disability Network.
Louise joined the Constructing Mindsets team having won the “Best Young Woman Engineer” category at the WICE Awards 2019.
Hannah is a senior electrical engineer at Hurley Palmer Flatt, working within the Data Centre team. Previously she worked in Energy and Chemicals for Fluor for 5.5 years. On top of her role on projects, she has been an innovation ambassador for Fluor, regularly supports charity work and STEM outreach programs whilst maintaining a role in growing representation and opportunities for women within engineering.
Having suffered personal trauma and her own mental health diagnosis, Hannah now blogs about mental health and works with local communities to help remove the stigma and provide support and guidance for people who need it most. Find out more at engineeryourmind.com. She discussed this work during her WICE presentation as a finalist for the “Best Young Woman Engineer” and therefore was a natural candidate for joining the Constructing Mindsets team.
