This breakfast forum will discuss the importance of fire engineering and how fire engineering approaches could lead to significant cost savings and achieve value-engineering in large-scale underground civil and infrastructural projects including metro tunnel, road tunnel, railway tunnel projects etc.
The speakers will present internationally recognized successful project examples covering different fire engineering aspects from early project involvements and authority management to fire structural FE analysis to Eurocodes and structural fire testing specification. Each example will cover specific aspects with discussion sessions in between.
The examples include Copenhagen Cityringen, Fehmarn Belt, Doha Metro, and Oslo Metro, etc. Copenhagen Cityringen will show how early involvements in fire engineering were able to achieve value engineering goals and overcome obstacles of existing codes, where they were able to remove 17 shafts from the original design that lead to significant savings.
Examples from Fehmarn Belt will show how Longitudinal Ventilation System has been applied in tunnels and the benefits of it in contrast to Transverse Ventilation System used in Hong Kong. Oslo Metro shows examples of fire engineer and design optimization approaches from the project planning stage for drill and blast tunnels and cavers in similar conditions to those in Hong Kong.
The rest of the examples will discuss the current international practices in fire structural design, codes and standards, international experience in overcoming boundaries of codes for value-engineering and the role/benefits of Building Information Model (BIM) through the project cycle, etc.

Bojana is currently the Director of MEP Infrastructure of COWI's Tunnels and Underground Infrastructure Department, based in Copenhagen, Denmark. Bojana has over 20 years of experience in MEP design and design management with a background in thermodynamics, Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC), tunnel ventilation and overall MEP systems, including fire-fighting, fire detection, power supply and earthing.
Bojana has been involved in various large-scale infrastructure projects globally including Lower Thames Crossing (large span bored tunnels running underneath Thames) in the U.K., Dubai Storm Water Tunnel in the U.A.E., Copenhagen Metro as well as other projects in Europe and the Middle East.
Steven holds a Bachelors Degree (BSc) in Fire Engineering from Letterkenny Institute of Technology, Ireland and a Masters Degree in Fire Engineering from University of Ulster, Northern Ireland. Steven is currently the lead Fire Engineer in COWI Gulf A/S based in Dubai UAE. Steven is the lead engineer on numerous fire engineering projects including Highrise buildings, Malls, Airports and Underground Structures.
Steven is an Associate member of the Institute of Fire Engineers and a Member of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE), sitting on the Committee on Professional Development.
