Morpeth Alleviation Scheme.
Morpeth Alleviation Scheme.

About this event

Our solution to reduce flood risk combined existing defences in Morpeth with new town defences to achieve a consistent 1:50 year Standard of Protection (SoP). This was supplemented by the provision of an upstream storage area to increase the SoP to 1:137 year return period, which is the same as the 2008 flood.

A close working relationship with the community was key to developing the scheme design and delivering the construction phase.

The presenters will cover the following aspects of the scheme:

  • The history of flooding in Morpeth and the need for the project.
  • The approach taken to reducing the flood risk in Morpeth.
  • The approach taken to accommodate and effectively manage the environmental constraints.
  • The construction challenges and issues that were overcome to successfully deliver the scheme.
  • How we worked with the community to deliver the scheme.

  • Anthony Myatt – Environment Agency Project Manager.
  • Dorian Latham – CH2M Project Manager/ Environmental Manager (now JBA Consulting)
  • Andy Moore – Balfour Beatty Project Manager
