Plans for New Masonry Arch Viaduct at Bristol Downs, Bristol

About this event

The Bristol and Bath G&S committee is pleased to invite you to a lecture by Dr Adrienn Tomor about the approved plans to build a pedestrian stone arch bridge at Bristol Downs.

Dr. Adrienn Tomor is a masonry arch bridge expert and senior lecturer at the University of the West of England (UWE) in Bristol.

Since 2012, she has been working with ‘Friends of the Avon Gorge’ to develop plans to build a stone arch bridge for pedestrians and cyclists. This would help to join two separated parts of an otherwise circular route and allow people to safely pass over the busy road below in the gorge.

The approval of the plans in 2016 represents a major breakthrough for masonry arch bridges. They have been built for thousands of years and have stood the test of time in many cases, but in the last 100 years hardly any have been constructed. Therefore, this new viaduct would likely be the first of its kind in Europe for many years if construction goes ahead!

Refreshments will be served from 18:00 in the Pugsley foyer, with the lecture starting at 18:30
