Sustainable assessment systems for buildings, civil structures and neighbourhoods have now been with us for over 20 years.
What really have they achieved and what might be their legacy? Have they really moved the built environment toward sustainability?
It seems that now might be a good time to review their track record, their effectiveness, discuss alternatives and possible future developments.
Dr Amato has over 40 years’ experience in the built environment. He has worked in both the private and public sectors in the UK, SE Asia and now in the Middle East. Since gaining his PhD at Oxford Brookes University over 20 years ago, he has sought to resolve. His work covers a wide gamut, from design, to construction, product development and research.
In Qatar he spent the first three years providing sustainable consultancy within Davis Langdon but for the last six years he has held the position of Head of Sustainability at the Qatar Green Building Council, part of Qatar Foundation. Here he has helped deliver an expanding research and education programme. In particular, the development of the first Passivhaus in the GCC Region, and research with Texas A&M University – Qatar and College Station, and with the College of the North Atlantic – Qatar both funded through the National Priorities Research Programme of the Qatar National Research Fund.
