Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers – Flagships for the future, Derby

About this event

At 65,000 tonnes each, the Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers are the largest and most capable ships ever built for the Royal Navy.

The carrier includes two Rolls-Royce MT30 marine gas turbines, which will work with four diesel generators to supply the ship's high voltage electrical power. The vessel also features our adjustable bolted propellers and shaft lines, steering gear and rudders, retractable stabilisers and the complete low voltage electrical distribution system.

HMS Queen Elizabeth, the Royal Navy's largest warship, sailed into its new home in Portsmouth, UK on the 17th August 2017. Thousands of onlookers came out to mark the occasion, nearly two months after the aircraft carrier left Rosyth dockyard in Scotland to carry out sea trials. The first development work started more than 10 years ago, with the manufacturing contract signed in 2008 and the commissioning of the first gas turbine alternator in 2015.

This talk, by the Project Director at UK MoD, will look at the role these ships will play in the 21st Century Navy, their construction, some key engineering features and an overview of the programme.

The East Midlands Engineering and Science Professionals (EMESP) is composed of local representatives from the leading science and engineering professional Institutions and Societies which have national coverage, global in many cases. EMESP enables existing Institutions, Universities and other Bodies to work together, helps defining synergies among the diverse engineering and science professions and promotes awareness that engineering and science are exciting, rewarding and fun careers for young men and women who seek opportunities at the highest levels anywhere in the world.
