Greece’s geopolitical position, as the southernmost part of the Balkan Peninsula, offers significant advantages that, if properly exploited, will allow the country to play a key role in freight transports in the wider region and in Europe in general, and thus turn into a freight traffic hub.

The lecture covers the major rail projects planned and current, including new high-speed railway lines equipped with signalling, telecommunications & electrification from Athens – Patras and from Athens-Thessaloniki.

The connection of Greece’s main ports through a rail network meeting European standards constitutes a national objective. For this reason, it has been identified as key priority in the investment programme implemented by ERGOSE for the modernization of the rail network.

To conclude, the completion of large-scale rail projects and the concession of port infrastructures create a favourable framework that will allow Greece to take advantage of the international landscape and position itself on the world map as a hub for the supply chain and international trade, through the use of combined transport.
