Liz Mayes is CEO of The Common Room, a new Charity set up to oversee the £7.1m redevelopment of the Mining Institute in Newcastle.

Liz will give an overview of how they managed to secure £4.1m of National Lottery Heritage Funds to support an engineering-skills based mission and reflections on engineering skills inspiration from a heritage and culture lens.

Liz Mayes

Liz is Chief Executive of The Common Room, having joined in September 2017 to lead a £7mn development project to rejuvenate the building and collection of the North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers at their Grade 2 listed facilities in central Newcastle. Originally from Lincoln Liz moved to the North East 20 years ago to study Economics at Durham University.

Having fallen for the charms of the region’s community and heritage Liz began working for TBR Economics in Newcastle as a researcher before starting a 12-year career with the CBI “The Voice of Business”. Liz became Acting Regional Director for CBI in January 2014 before moving to be Regional Director of EEF, The Manufacturers Organisation, in September that year.

She lives in North Shields with her husband Steve and two young daughters. She is also a trustee of the Centre for Life.
