New technologies are developed and brought into highly competitive markets where time pressures are a key factor. The same markets rightly expect very high levels of safety in these products. This brings a potential tension where products are being developed whilst the understanding of some associated hazards may not be fully complete.
This event will examine the issues around the reduction and control of hazards in emerging technologies with industry leading expert insights provided across the rapidly developing fields of nuclear safety, healthcare and ergonomics.

Hugh Stephenson (Principal Consultant, CRA) graduated from Kingston University with a first class Hons degree in Automotive Engineering Design. He has been part of the team at CRA for over 11 years, specialising in Nuclear safety and risk, and is now a highly respected Principal Consultant and business lead for the company's Probabilistic Safety Analysis (PSA) Service.
Recently, Hugh has been involved in a range of projects related to Control and Instrumentation (C&I) for both existing and new NPPs. These projects have focussed particularly on C&I reliability and how C&I is currently modelled in PSA, exploring the ways in which this could be refined to improve insights and aid risk informed decision making. Hugh has also been involved in the testing of Risk Spectrum PSA software and regularly delivers training on PSA to current clients, to raise awareness of its uses, benefits and limitations.
Richard has worked in the field of human factors for around 20 years, he is a registered member of the Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors (CIEHF) who has worked primarily in high hazard industries including nuclear fuel reprocessing and decommissioning. Richard works in the areas of human reliability, use-related risk assessment, user-interface design and safety case production.
