Transport for Wales – Regional Transport Modelling in Wales, webinar

Watch this event

The webinar is organised by the ICE Wales Cymru Transportation Engineering Group (TEG) and will be chaired by Rhian Watts, Chair, TEG.

Transport for Wales (TfW), working with the Welsh Government (WG), has developed a suite of transport models that covers the whole of Wales. The models represent car, bus and rail, as well as walking and cycling for access to rail stations and bus stops. The models contain information on the trips that people make by each form of transport and are a key part for delivering the future of transport in Wales.

The Wales Regional Transport Models will give us a better understanding of how the entire transport system works, allow us to assess the likely transport impact of different development scenarios and provide a means of testing a variety of new transport solutions so that we can propose schemes that make a positive difference to people’s lives.

The regional models are playing a key part in delivering key schemes and policies in Wales ranging from the Metro Schemes to understanding the impact of Covid-19 on the network and the way in which travel has changed. The presentation will introduce the Regional Models and present some key assessments being undertaken with TfW and WG.

Matthew Howells

Senior Transport Modeller, Transport for Wales

Matthew Howells

Mat is the Senior Transport Modeller within the Analytical unit. He has knowledge and capability in data collection/analysis, project appraisal, project monitoring and evaluation and transport modelling through a number of software packages (QGIS, MOIRA, LENNON, SATURN & VISUM). He uses these packages to explain and detail complex datasets in a clear and easily understandable format.

Having spent 10 years in local authorities, Mat has extensive stakeholder engagement experience working with various levels of the public sector.

Rhian Watts

Senior Transport Modeller, Transport for Wales

Rhian Watts

Rhian is a Senior Transport Modeller working within the Analytical Unit at TfW. She has been working within the transport sector in Wales for 14 years and have experience in major scheme assessments and WelTAG appraisal methods for transport schemes. One of her key skills area is transport modelling and appraisal using a variety of software packages; traffic engineering models (ARCADY, TRICS, PICADY, TRANSYT, TEMPRO and LINSIG); strategic traffic models (SATURN); micro-simulation models (VISSIM/VISSUM).

Rhian also provide economic appraisal of transport schemes using software packages (COBA, TUBA). As part of her role in TfW I work closely with stakeholders; including WG, LAs, Transport Forums and other transport groups to support transport schemes and developing the future transport in Wales.
