About this event

It is a small, isolated volcanic island situated approximately midway between South Africa and South America, and is home to Edinburgh of the Seven Seas, the world's most remote settlement.

The nearest habitation is the island of St Helena, 1,450 miles to the north, whilst the nearest main land port is Cape Town, 1,700 miles to the east. Calshot Harbour is the only protected landing area on the island providing a vital lifeline for the islanders to the outside world. There is no airfield on TdC.

Studies conducted by CH2M on behalf of the Department for International Development, highlighted that Calshot Harbour was in urgent need of rehabilitation and the breakwaters were in possible danger of collapse.
