Retro-fitting hydro turbines onto utility, Gloucester

About this event

Join C&G City Club for this talk presented by Richard Rider BEng IEng MICE.

In recent years, UK water companies have taken advantage of renewable energy Feed-in-Tariffs offered by the government. Perhaps surprisingly, hydro-power has taken back-seat to solar, wind and anaerobic digester installations.

This talk will describe experiences drawn from three such hydro-power projects, introduce hydro-power principles, and discuss future opportunities.

The talk will focus on three different retro-fit hydro-power projects undertaken in the northwest, highlighting the technical and managerial issues encountered with connecting into live utility assets.

Future opportunities for hydro-retro-fits, in the post Feed-in-Tariff era, will be explored with respect to the innovations employed and lessons learnt on these projects.

Richard Rider is a Senior Engineer at Renewables First, a hydropower designer and installer based in Stroud, Gloucestershire.
