The need to boost resilience to both flood risk and water scarcity has been well documented in recent years. Extreme rainfall events have shown how vulnerable our infrastructure is, while population growth in water scarce areas puts pressure on supply. The digital revolution, and the rise of Internet of Things (IoT) technology, can offer us solutions to both challenges.
Continuous monitoring and adaptive control (CMAC) is one such solution. By utilising weather data, real-time monitoring and situational infrastructure adaptations, CMAC allows us to use existing infrastructure more efficiently, both to improve flood response and to boost supply of non-potable water. As well as reacting to extreme weather events, CMAC also records and stores data for long term analysis, so we can plan for future situations.
Part of ICE’s Energy, Resilience & Climate Change knowledge programme, this webinar will provide a short introduction to CMAC technology and outline several applications, including combined sewer overflow reduction and combined rainwater harvesting and attenuation systems. This will be followed by a live demonstration of existing projects.
Lutz Johnen is the Managing Director of Aquality Trading & Consulting Ltd., a company specialised in designing, supplying and installing non-potable water management systems mainly rainwater harvesting and greywater recycling systems. Projects delivered include the Westfield Shopping Centre, Kings Cross or the Shard in London. Lutz has been involved in rainwater harvesting and greywater recycling more than 20 years.
He is chairman of the UK Rainwater Harvesting Association. He is a member of the German, French and the US American rainwater harvesting association.
He is also chairman of the British Standard subcommittee for rainwater harvesting and greywater recycling and currently representing the UK on the European Standard for the above subjects.
He is lecturer for the CIBSE Mid-Career College.
Marcus Quigley is the CEO and Founder of OptiRTC, a technology company focused on delivering a cloud-based platform for Continuous Monitoring and Adaptive Control (CMAC) of distributed stormwater infrastructure.
Mr. Quigley has more than 20 years of experience in solving complex engineering problems as well as leading and managing major projects and running organizations. As a national technical leader, he has extensive experience in passive and active stormwater and green infrastructure design and construction, research and development, modeling, data analysis, integration of information technologies, and environmental field data acquisition.
Mr. Quigley has co-authored numerous national guidance manuals for monitoring of stormwater runoff and evaluating and designing stormwater best management practices.
Mr. Quigley holds an MS in Civil Engineering from Oregon State University and a BS in Environmental Engineering from Notre Dame.
