Seattle Alaskan Way tunnel, London

Watch this event

In the northwest corner of the U.S, the Washington State Route 99 Alaskan Way Viaduct has been a fixture of grey concrete separating downtown Seattle from its picturesque waterfront for 60 years.

The Seattle Alaskan Way Tunnel is a bored road tunnel under construction in the city of Seattle in the north-east U.S. state of Washington. At 17.48 m diameter, a near world's largest tunnel boring machine began mining for the 2.8 km long SR-99 tunnel in 2013, the centerpiece of the state's efforts to replace the seismically vulnerable viaduct. The presentation will provide an update of the tunnel progress, and an overview of some of the challenges and objectives of the project.

Speaker: Chris Bambridge, Mott MacDonald.
