In September 2012 a Malaysian consortium of SP Setia, Sime Darby Property and the Employers Provident Fund successfully purchased Battersea Power Station to kick start the redevelopment of an iconic London landmark and one of the capital’s most sought after regeneration projects.
The project will build upon the consented master plan comprising 8M sq ft of mixed-use space including residential, major retail, commercial and leisure facilities, providing a new town centre in central London, within two miles of Westminster. To be developed in eight phases the project will ultimately generate over 4,000 residential apartments and 20,000 employment opportunities within 19 acres of public realm, including a 6 acre riverside park and a short walk to Battersea Park.
The urban quarter will also be one of the largest retail developments footprint within the UK and in creating a better connectivity with the River Thames will provide a stunning gateway to the project as well as a provide a vital transport link for commuters, residents and leisure visitors.
Phase 2 of the development is the refurbishment of the iconic Battersea Power Station itself and will comprise of one million ft² of truly mixed-use material within the walls of this historic building.
The project, will provide high quality retail on the lower three floors, a large events space as well as 540,000sq ft of office spaces within the central Boiler House and residential units in both of the annex buildings.
The redevelopment of Battersea Power Station has undoubtedly played to BuroHappold’s strengths at unlocking challenging and complex urban redevelopment projects.
