The A142 Ely Southern Bypass scheme was first conceived nearly 30 years ago to alleviate considerable congestion caused by a the A142 crossing the railway via a height segregated underbridge/level crossing arrangement. The bypass is a compact 1.6km link road which crosses soft floodplain and the River Gt Ouse on a 300m twin-box viaduct as well as two rail lines via a 100m long bridge.
The project has faced myriad challenges to arrive at a scheme with planning consent and adequate funding. With these principal hurdles overcome the Design and Build team of VolkerFitzpatrick and Tony Gee has developed the project from outline design, through detailed design to construction on site. Construction is now well under way, with the main steel structure of the railway bridge in place and the steel spans of the Ouse Viaduct being installed.
The visit will consist of a presentation from a representative of the project followed by a guided tour of the site.
