This is an opportunity to hear about a project which achieved a certificate of excellence at the 2018 ICE Yorkshire and Humber Awards.
This twelve mile scheme upgraded a heavily congested section of the M1 from dual 3-lane motorway to a 4-lane configuration within the existing footprint. The integrated delivery team comprised Highways England (Client) WSP (designer) and Costain (Principal Contractor). They faced significant challenges including high traffic volumes, limited access and narrow verges which resulted in several innovative solutions to deliver the project on programme and to budget.
It is the first smart motorway scheme to use variable mandatory speed limits to manage both traffic and air quality requirements and has successfully transformed the opinions of the police who initially had significant safety concerns regarding the smart motorway concept.
Our speaker will describe these challenges and the solutions that were developed including the use of BIM, standardisation and modular construction techniques, and managing key environmental constraints.
Tea and coffee will be served at registration for the meeting, at no charge to members. Following the meeting a cash bar will be open and a hot and cold self-service buffet will be served, to be ordered in advance when booking for the meeting and paid in cash at registration. The cost for lunch will be £14 per person and £2 for dessert.
If you book but later you find that you are unable to attend, provided that you notify the Hon Sec not later than the booking deadline below, you will not be charged. If you cancel after that we will endeavour to make an adjustment with the venue so that you may not have to pay, but we reserve the right to request reimbursement from you if that isn’t possible.
