Smart motorways have been delivered for over 20 years, but their design has evolved over time into the current preferred option of permanent conversion of the hard shoulder. The first scheme in the north-west opened in 2017, another is in construction and six others are being designed with construction planned to commence by 2021. What is the latest thinking on design and technology and what does this mean for the north-west?
