Sonning hydropower station, Sonning

About this event

Greenford Ltd completed the design and construction of an Archimedes screw driven hydropower station on the banks of the Thames in Sonning, Berkshire in January 2017 for client, Pridewater Estates Ltd.

Commissioning of this project gives Pridewater Estates the prestige of becoming Britains first 100% 'green' marina organisation through the production of sufficient power to counter the business's total annual energy consumption.

Visitors will be given a guided tour of the facility by Greenford Ltd Director, Simon Rogers. He is co-owner and Director of the Company, a civil engineering firm with offices in Oxford, Birmingham and Maidenhead. Simon has been in the industry for 25 years and has been a part of many significant and pioneering builds across the country.

Parking on site is very limited. Attendees are encouraged to travel in as few vehicles as possible. The group should meet Simon in the car park of the neighbouring Sonning Mill Theatre and then follow his instructions on how to access the site down a single, unpaved road through a private, locked gate. (Parking may be had down this lane with a few spaces at the actual hydropower station site.)

The visit will be of approximately an hour's duration.

The project was the winner of Thames Valley Branch's Award for Engineering Excellence, 2017as well as South East England's Sustainability and Resilience Award 2017.
