Southam Quarry Tunnel: my design & build SCL experience, London

About this event

Southam Quarry, located in Warwickshire, is relied upon to supply clay and limestone to the Cemex cement works in Rugby. The proposed quarry extension will ensure the continued supply of material to the plant for the next 28 years.

Designed and constructed by Morgan Sindall, the new 60m SCL tunnel is to run directly underneath the A426 carriageway to expand the site to the new area, where there is an estimated 14 million tons of reserves. The tunnel will form an integral part of a 1km long conveyor system which will transport 2500 tons/day of quarried material to the processing plant.

This presentation will focus on both the design and build aspects of the SCL tunnel as well as looking at the specific construction methodology used to build both the portals and the tunnel itself. It will also discuss the project from a personal point of view as it was Will's first tunnelling project he was heavily involved with.
