Core Investment Period Highway Design - Fedda Hussain, Amey

In the first five years of the Sheffield Streets Ahead PFI contract (the Core Investment Period (CIP)), approximately 70% of the city's roads will be improved. The highway design team work together with other design disciplines (Traffic Signs & Lines, Drainage, Signals, Street Lighting and Structures) to complete pre-construction information packs of design information with consideration to the contract constraints.

The packs are then used by Amey's Local Government Operations teams to deliver the improvements on site. Highway designs are prepared in cooperation with Amey's Local Government Network team to ensure they are working to contractual, programme and commercial requirements.

Oughtibridge Bridge Strengthening Project - Kareem Abusmeihah, Amey

Oughtibridge Bridge carries a busy link road over the River Don. It is a 3-span masonry arch structure, which was widened in 1913 by the addition of flanking reinforced concrete 'wings'. The wings now carry the footways. An assessment carried out in 1996 showed that the two 'wings' required strengthening.

An innovative and unique reinforced concrete solution was chosen to address the many constraints associated with the site and minimise disruption to the public. The design solution had to allow construction to proceed whilst keeping the busy link road open, as well as having minimal effect on buried services to avoid expensive diversions. The solution also had to avoid any significant effect on the River Don both during construction and after completion, as well as staying within the budget set for the contract.
