About this event

This new Standard has now just passed through the public comment period and review has been completed on the comments. It is estimated the Standard will be published around late September this year at a best case scenario.

The new Standard is an important step for structural steelwork in Australia, and introduces a risk-based fit-for-purpose approach strongly aligned with the importance level in the Building Code of Australia. Engineers will need to assess the 'Construction Category' for a structure or part thereof.

The presentation will discuss the procurement environment in Australia, the risk profile engineers face, the benefits that AS/NZS 5131 brings and the supporting initiatives that ASI has enacted, including the 'National Structural Steelwork Compliance Scheme' and fabricator certification. The latter becomes, in effect, a national fabricator technical prequalification scheme, which should have enormous benefits for both sides of the steelwork project procurement process.
