Swinden and Lee Green are two earth embankment type dams just east of Burnley, Lancashire and were built in the 1860's. Inspection of these raised concerns regarding their overflow facilities and upgrades were recommended in the interest of safety. United Utilities let the contract for construction of new reinforced concrete overflow structures to VolkerStevin in 2012 and GHD Livigunn were appointed as Civil Design Consultants.
Despite freezing temperatures, record rain, steep slopes and 7ft snow drifts the project was a great success, going on to win the accolade of Medium Project of the year at the ICE North West Awards and receiving recognition from the British Dams Society (BDS) as 'an exemplary case study'.
This joint presentation between United Utilities, VolkerStevin and GHD Livigunn discusses some of the more interesting aspects of the project, from conception through to completion, with testimonies from each party's perspective; How do you safely cut a hole in a reservoir embankment in mid-winter?
Refreshments will be served from 1800 for a meeting start of 18:30.
Organised by Lancashire Branch, this will be a joint event with CIWEM.
