The Garden Bridge is infrastructure and destination; it is both a 350m long pedestrian bridge over the Thames as well as a 6000m2 garden and place to visit and place to relax in the heart of London
Francis will describe the vision of the project, describing the bridge, the garden and the landings, showing how it fits into the busy city around it.
He will then show how this concept translates into very specific engineering requirements and describe the proposed structural solution, key materials, the construction envisaged and the foreseen programme for delivery.
Francis Archer is an associate director at Arup and lead engineer on the Garden Bridge.
Before switching career to Structural Engineering in 1995, Francis was a mathematician, completed a PhD in theoretical physics in Cambridge and carried out post-doctoral research in Germany.
In his 20 years at Arup Francis has worked with leading architects designing and engineering buildings, bridges and sculptures from concept through to completion.
