This presentation disseminates findings from a collaborative research project funded by Highways England, Eurobitumen UK and Mineral Products Association tasked with developing the next generation of asphalt surfacings, under the working title of "Premium Asphalt Surfacing System (PASS)".
This research project, started in 2015, was tasked with "ensuring that asphalt surfacings continue to deliver value for money on the motorway and all-purpose trunk road network and to maximise the benefits from innovation".
The primary challenge was to develop asphalt surfacing materials with enhanced durability properties without compromising on safety requirements and noise performance properties. The mix design principle for the PASS was targeted on a dense, low voided, durable asphalt material with good surface characteristics (low noise and good macrotexture).
AECOM facilitated and coordinated delivery of the research programme which successfully completed an international workshop, the construction of demonstration trials and the installation of the PASS on a section of Highways England's all-purpose trunk road network. Findings and recommendations from these events and tasks since its conception to road trials will be presented.
Joint presentation with Institute of Asphalt Technology.
